Choosing An Interior Door

An expertly crafted door with a refined design can enhance any home space. But few homeowners give due consideration to the type of interior doors used within their home. They can add significant value to a living space and can be designed to provide a refined décor finish that engages home visitors and inspires action on behalf of potential buyers. In this post, we’ll take a look at what you need to know about choosing an interior door.

Choosing An Interior Door

Balance the Size of the Room with the Door

One important element to consider when selecting any interior door is the size of the room in which the door will be integrated. If the room is quite small and compact, a larger ornate door might overwhelm the area and limit the available room to move around. Smaller doors and door features should be chosen for small living spaces. This can help bring décor balance that ensures all elements stand out.

Consider Door Swing in High Traffic Areas

The movement of the door when it’s opened makes a significant difference to the flow within the home. It’s important to notice the styles of door swings available. A door that has a handle on the right hand side when it opens towards a person is a right-hand swing door, for example. Homeowners should ensure that their interior doors don’t open into hall and corridor areas, in order to prevent blocking people from safely moving around the home.

Sound Ratings Determine Sound Control

Sound ratings determine the amount of sound lost through the door material. Most doors are rated by a STC (Sound Transmission Class) number. The higher the number the less sound can travel through the door. For music studios and other areas in which sound control is critical, an STC of 60 and above is generally recommended, but materials with an average STC of around 40 are suitable for most interior door applications.

A Comprehensive Range of Available Door Types

Homeowners have a comprehensive array of door types to select from when choosing their ideal interior door. The most common type is panel doors, which are designed with class square patterns and are commonly available in wood and other traditional materials. Alternative options include French doors, which can be used to maximize light in the home space and sliding doors, which are designed to conserve space within smaller homes.

By considering these factors, homeowners can make their ideal door selection when evaluating the interior door marketplace. To discover more on the selection process, contact our expert team directly!
